10 Comments on “Android Notes App – AgileNote! (A fast and powerful notepad)

    • AgileNote! requires Android 3 (Honeycomb) or Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) at this time. What OS version are you running? I plan to support previous versions of Android in the future.

  1. I tried this on my Lenovo TPT, and my feedback below..

I’ve basically tried (what felt like) a gazillion note taking apps in the past 2 weeks, so apologies if I sound rather demanding :p

    The good:
    – Can add text to the audio recording and picture.
    – On homepage, preview of the text in notes under note title. (Though, would like it if there is an option to turn that on/off?)

    The bad:
    – Limited to just one page at a time for drawing, so it’s not practical for me as I use my tablet for work, and need to be able to take tonnes of notes during meeting
In text notes, it’s possible to just keep on typing, but without pagination, it’s a little hard to organise the notes.

    – Having to click “Back” button to save and return to home screen seems counter-intuitive. Furthermore, if I was entering text, I’d have to first hide the keyboard, then the back button is there for me to press.. The tendency is to click on the icon on top left corner

    – Would be nice if we can rename the notes in the home page

    – Not immediately obvious that we can add text notes in all note types (except drawing notes). Have to click “return” key

    – Can only see rated vs unrated notes in the home screen.. would be more useful to see actual importance ratings.

    – Choosing stroke width – the Plus/Minus thing is quite annoying to be honest.. I think a slider would be more efficient

    The ugly:
    – In Drawing mode, there is a button “Edit note” .
In the beginning, when I clicked on it, the app crashed. (I tried it a few times, and it crashed all times.)
But later on, it seems to work fine. Not sure if it’s because I actually changed the note title for some other notes?

    • Thanks for the great input! Let me address some of them.

      – On homepage, preview of the text in notes under note title. (Though, would like it if there is an option to turn that on/off?)

That should be fairly easy to add. I hope to add lots of options for configuring in the upcoming releases.

      – Limited to just one page at a time for drawing, so it’s not practical for me as I use my tablet for work, and need to be able to take tonnes of notes during meeting

This part was intentionally designed this way, but maybe it should be revisited. My primary goal is to facilitate taking new notes quickly. I’ll have to think about that one.

In text notes, it’s possible to just keep on typing, but without pagination, it’s a little hard to organise the notes.

Pagination would be a cool feature. I’ll need to think about how dividing up text might work and affect features like sharing.

      – Having to click “Back” button to save and return to home screen seems counter-intuitive. Furthermore, if I was entering text, I’d have to first hide the keyboard, then the back button is there for me to press.. The tendency is to click on the icon on top left corner

I’ve been thinking about this as well. Since I built it around Android 3+, the ActionBar provides room to include a save option which might make more sense. I may replace the revert button with a save button and the back button as the revert action.

      – Would be nice if we can rename the notes in the home page

      I’ll think about this.

      – Not immediately obvious that we can add text notes in all note types (except drawing notes). Have to click “return” key

The draw note needs to use the full screen to allow drawing which is why I put the edit ability in the menu. All other notes display the title and note field directly in the note. Both do kind of run together and I’m going to try and distinquish these as text entry fields better.

      – Can only see rated vs unrated notes in the home screen.. would be more useful to see actual importance ratings.

I have 5 green gradient importance levels. I plan to change this to easier defined colors. This might be another opportunity to let users choose between stars or actual values.

      – Choosing stroke width – the Plus/Minus thing is quite annoying to be honest.. I think a slider would be more efficient

Agreed, planning to convert to slider and visibly show the size on the fly.

      – In Drawing mode, there is a button “Edit note”. In the beginning, when I clicked on it, the app crashed. (I tried it a few times, and it crashed all times.)

The app or android itself havent sent any reports of these crashings. I’ll look into because they should be.

    • I apologize for the late response, All text notes are stored in a sqllite database as part of the app. If you want to access them you will want to run a backup, which exports the text part to an xml file in the data directory com.phoeniix.agilenote.

  2. This is the very best app that I have been looking for ever since I lost all of these facilities with my Palm Pilot. I am trying to determine how to create categories for notes such as To Do, Follow Up etc to group notes but cannot find how to create categories. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

With a category function this is the most comprehensive app I have found in years

    Regards

    Norman

    • Thanks! To order notes, you simply need to switch into folder mode. Do that by clicking the settings icon in the title bar, click Note View, then click Folder View. In Folder View you can create and edit Folders.

  3. HI there,

How do you run a backup of the text notes? I was able to run a usb from the phone to my pc and found the folder com.phoeniix.agilenote but there was only an audio folder (here i was able to find my notes that I recorded via audio) in there not a data folder. Where can I find the data folder to back up the notes to be saved on my pc? thanks

    • All text on notes are stored in a sqllite database. If you want to access them you will want to open the Backup/Restore popup in settings and click “Backup”. This exports the text to an xml file in the data directory at /Android/data/com.phoeniix.agilenote/backup. Attachments are stored in adjacent folders to “backup” called audio, drawings, and photos. You can run the backup function to save the text, then copy the com.phoeniix.agilenote folder off the device. If you copy it back to the Android/data directory on another device (or reset device), you can go back into the Backup/Restore popup later and click the “Restore” button to restore the notes to another device.
